face-to-face? how creepyI have always thought that there is a weird preoccupation that some CMC/CSCW researchers have with face-to-face communication. So I found it very refreshing to read one of Mimi Ito's papers and see the term "side-by-side" in print. It seems like a much more realistic metaphor for communication. People simply do not communicate face-to-face in most situations. Face-to-face is appropriate for a broadcast/lecture delivery format and for cocktail parties. It's also a source of social anxiety--there's an entire episode of Seinfeld about 'close talkers.' Face to face is sometimes just too... creepy.
